Backup via a Web Site

If you have a web site or access to web space you can use excess space (assuming you have excess space on the web server) to backup your PC and/or network data files.  NOTE: If you don't have a web site or space check with us about getting one set-up.  A small web site can be configured and maintained for as little as $25/month.

How to backup to your web space:

You will need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) tool.  We recommend a FREE product from IPSWITCH called WS_FTP LE.  You can download this FREE utility from ftpPlanet at:

http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm

Scroll near the bottom of the page and click the radio button for WS_FTP LE.  You can skip the part to download the software offer and the WS_FTP LE download will start automatically.  When prompted select SAVE and when the download completes select OPEN and the install will start.  When complete you will have an icon on your desktop to launch WS_FTP LE.

Launch the WS_FTP LE application.  A window will open asking you for a "profile name" (your selection of what you want to name the configuration to connect to your web site) and ftp login information that should be provided by whoever setup your web site.

Once connected you will hear (assuming your PC had audio capability) a train siren type sound letting you know that you have successfully connected to your ftp site.  The window will now be divided in two sections.  The left section is like Windows Explorer or My Computer for your local storage.  The right side is the root directory of your web site.

On the right side we recommend creating a new directory (maybe name it "BACKUP").  Simply click on the Mkdir button ON THE RIGHT SIDE of the window and type the name you  decided on.  Now DOUBLE CLICK on that directory name on the RIGHT SIDE to open that directory folder.

Back to the LEFT SIDE.  Navigate using the Chgdir button (if you know the exact directory path) or the green arrow at the top of the LEFT SIDE window until you locate the directory with files you want to backup.  When you reach that directory click once to make sure it is highlighted and then click on the arrow pointing to the right in the border between the two window frames.  This will start the transfer of the files from your Pc to the web server in your BACKUP directory.

Please note that you will have a finite amount of space allocated to your web site and you will not be able to surpass that allocated space.  You can always get more space from your web hosting provider.

Hope this helps!
